June 10: Day 40, Rest day in Kungsbacka

I'm staying with friends today, and it's not just a rest day, it's been a seriously relaxing day. Slept in, ate lots of good food, sat in the sun for most of the day, drank waaaaaay more than I normally do, and I'm now so well rested I realize I was a bit run down before.

But it was such a chill day that I didn't think of taking photos!

So today's update is happening with descriptive audio instead of pictures.

From left to right:

- Hugh notices the label on the carton of orange juice recommends shaking it first, but does not notice that the cap is off. Hilarity ensures.

- A Swedish coffee pot is on the table. This is essentially a stovetop espresso maker, but it makes about two litres of coffee. It also doesn't need a stove. It's a revelation to Hugh, and he's wondering where to find one in the Netherlands.

- A very nice Swedish couple and Hugh are drinking in the sun while talking about AI. They've been talking about AI for some time. They've also been drinking for some time. It's a good day.

I also arranged the tour for the next few days, but the only interesting part is that tomorrow's route goes through Trollhättan. Manhattan was built for man, so obviously this is the predecessor … for trolls.

More seriously: Trollhättan is beside a waterfall, which was an annoying obstacle in an otherwise fine waterway. In the 1700s/1800s there was a major engineering project to build locks to raise ships 32m up and around the waterfall. Trollhätte Kanal AB is the company that managed the canal and locks; in 1905 it was bought by the Swedish government. It became Vattenfall, the Swedish national power company. Which expanded, and now provides energy in other EU countries: including some places in the Netherlands. And it's actually our electricity provider in Amsterdam!

Big, big thanks to K— and T— for having me to stay for two nights, I really appreciate it. Staying with friends is so much nicer than hanging out alone in a hotel. I need to return the favour sometime!

What I’m listening to: a lot of Julee Cruise. Like “The Nightingale”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG0ssGCTJqY&list=RD4eWn3tByhYg
But also “The World Spins”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA4heQsi5yQ&list=RD4eWn3tByhYg
