June 5: Day 35, Rest day in Flensburg

Bit of an awkward rest day. I'd chosen a place on the edge of town, it didn't serve breakfast but I was expecting to be able to cook ... but since I was unexpectedly reduced to staying one night and needed to check out by 10am and the supermarket wasn't open yesterday, breakfast was suddenly a problem. Since I didn't have a room during the day I didn't have a place to lurk in my longjohns, so I couldn't throw everything into a single wash like I did in Montélimar. And the guesthouse was kind enough to let me stay in the shared social room during the day, but since I had checked out I didn't have a key, so getting back into the building was also an issue...

But after sorting those things out I was able to plan out the route to Gothenburg, and book accommodation. It’s starting to get sparser. It's hard to know whether demand is high, or prices are normally this high... but I'm booking this whole section in advance so I'm doing all I can.

There was one hiccup though. I found a place with a good price and mediocre reviews in the center of Hadsund, booked it, and when I checked the address in the confirmation email, it was in the next town, an hour further away! Seems that the summary map didn't show the location correctly. There is no option to cancel and get even a partial refund. So on Wednesday I have an unusually long ride.

After that housekeeping I cycled across town to the next hotel. Checkin was managed by a kiosk, I didn’t see a human at all on the way to the room. Perhaps breakfast will also be served by a large vending machine? I hope not. Unless it’s serving pancakes.

From left to right: the check-in machine. Evidence of other bikepackers in the hotel lobby. Random street art which I liked.

On the other hand, since there were no humans there was no-one to object to me taking my bike up to my room…

I did a cleanup of the snacks I have on the bike, threw out a few things that were getting a bit stale, and picked up some more dried fruit and nuts. And some mango slices because they’re the best. I also found that there was an unopened packed of trail mix! It’s open now and it’s getting snacked on because it’s tasty stuff. And to save weight, of course.

I went to a very good (and cheap) place called the Green Kitchen, which didn’t have any desserts. Happily I found one on the way back.

What I’m listening to:   07:41 The Beginning of Something / Danger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro8qgK_FTf8
More French techno! The artist is not making it easy for themselves; being known as “Danger” leaves Google confused. Also, all their songs are named things like 8:16 or 4:42 or 8:50 and I can't remember which is which.
