Feb 23: Week 3 wrapup
The training program is divided into four week blocks. In each block the first week is easy and the last week is hard: this week is the hardest of the four.
The regular Tuesday session got moved to Monday so there were two classes in a row; meaning I’d do the spin class while tired. In addition I’d gone for the long ride to Houtribdijk on the Sunday so I was already a bit worn out. But there was time for a banana and a Snickers bar and a bit of rest between sessions and it all worked out OK.
There was also a personal training class on Wednesday to check on progress. And Thursday’s class was new to me, it focused on power output in one minute. This meant 40 seconds of high power, 20 seconds of rest, then repeat. I definitely prefer the endurance classes.
One downside of all this training is the amount of sweaty gym gear. I’m doing two extra washes every week just to keep up. It’s a good thing that it’s all very thin light clothing so it dries quickly and doesn’t get in the way of everyone else’s laundry.
It also means I need several outfits. I’ve got enough shirts and shorts but I’ve only got two pairs of good socks, so at least once a week I show up in some very old white running socks that I found at the bottom of the drawer. They’re not slim and flexible lycra, they’re thick and have the texture of cardboard.
9 weeks until the ride starts. Next week, I should get the bike sorted out. Probably should look into some new socks too.
